In a Nutshell
In stark contrast to the tourist honey pot of nearby Bourton on the Water, Lower Slaughter is a quieter, more sophisticated take on the Cotswold village. Come here for a relaxing walk along the River Eye and a quality bite to eat, without the crowds and then move on to one the other nearby villages for the shopping. Parking and Pooping
Lower Slaughter is just a minute off the A429 between Stow on the Wold and Bourton on the Water and as such is quite central in the Cotswold region. Parking is in short supply. There is no dedicated car park and the bulk of cars are parked on the Copsehill Road - the road in from the A429 - opposite the Lower Slaughter Manor. The Slaughers Inn across the river from the Manor has its own dedicated car park and I suspect a few people use this even when not using the Inn's facilities. On the plus side there is a plenty of grass for pup, but no public toilets we have noticed, so again the Inn is your best bet. If you find you cannot park and feel like a walk you may be best parking in Bourton on the Water and following the 1.5 mile path into Lower Slaughter. |
Walkies
Lower Slaughter is a great place to take a relaxing walk. Whether just a stroll along the river to the Old Mill, a walk up to (even sleepier) Upper Slaughter or a 3 mile round trip to Bourton on the Water. Traffic levels on the through-road are very low and there is a minor road on the opposite side of river for resident access only that makes a nice wide footpath. The riverside is bordered by grass and the river itself is normally shallow and slow flowing. Up by the Old Mill, there is easy access into the river by the bridge and dogs are often seeing playing in the water; Bella loves to take a dip here. Keeping the Human Amused
Other than the beauty of the village, Lower Slaughter has only one attraction - the Old Mill Museum and Tea Room. The water wheel still turns and the museum includes a gift shop and a tea room with seats set out on a patio alongside the river. There are no other tourist shops of any note, which is why the village remains as quiet as it does. The local residents even restricted the sale of ice creams from cycle carts! |
Chow Time
Lower Slaughter does have some quality food options. For a quick bite, the Old Mill Tea Room is probably your best bet. They do allow dogs in the patio area, but as you have to pass through the shop to access it, it is best to ask first. Wet dogs may well be refused! The Slaughters Inn is more gastro pub in style and has a spacious patio area for dining, its own large grassed area in the bend of the river and also allows dogs inside too. The Lower Slaughter Manor is place for tea on the lawn and is a very impressive hotel.
